How to Experience New York Fashion Week (Even If You're Not in the Fashion Industry)

For more than five years, I've had the opportunity to photograph New York Fashion Week from the inside. I've photographed runway shows, worked backstage before models stepped onto the catwalk, captured designers celebrating after their collections debuted, and documented everything from intimate presentations to large-scale productions. During that time, I've learned that New York Fashion Week isn't just for celebrities, editors, and models. There are actually several ways to become part of the experience, even if you've never worked in fashion before.
If you've ever dreamed of seeing a runway show, love fashion, want to break into the industry, or you're simply curious about what New York Fashion Week is really like, this guide is for you.
What Is New York Fashion Week?
New York Fashion Week is one of the biggest fashion events in the world and takes place twice every year. The February shows typically present upcoming Fall/Winter collections, while the September shows debut the following year's Spring/Summer collections.
The official New York Fashion Week calendar is organized by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and features many of the industry's biggest names. Depending on the season, designers such as Michael Kors, Christian Siriano, Coach, Carolina Herrera, Thom Browne, Khaite, and many others unveil their newest collections in venues across New York City. These official shows are highly exclusive, with invitations usually reserved for buyers, editors, celebrities, influencers, photographers, media, and industry professionals.
What many visitors don't realize, though, is that New York becomes completely transformed during Fashion Week. Hundreds of independent designers and production companies intentionally schedule their own runway shows during the same week. While these events aren't officially part of the CFDA calendar, many are beautifully produced, feature talented designers, and give fashion lovers an incredible opportunity to experience the excitement of Fashion Week firsthand.
1. Buy Tickets to Independent Runway Shows
The easiest way to attend a runway show is by purchasing tickets to one of the independent productions taking place during Fashion Week. Many of these events sell tickets through Eventbrite or directly through their own websites.

One production that holds a special place for me is Runway 7 Fashion. It was one of the very first fashion productions where I started building my career as a runway photographer, and I've always enjoyed working there. Although Runway 7 isn't part of the official CFDA schedule, the production quality is impressive. Their shows are usually held at the beautiful Paramount Hotel in Times Square, creating an atmosphere that feels polished and exciting from the moment you walk in.
One thing I especially like about Runway 7 is that your ticket often includes multiple designer presentations within the same time block rather than just a single runway show. That means you'll see several collections, experience different aesthetics, and have plenty of opportunities to capture photos and videos for your memories or social media.
Before buying tickets to any independent show, I always recommend doing a little research on the designers who will be presenting. Every designer has a completely different style, and making sure their aesthetic matches your interests can make your experience much more enjoyable. Some shows focus on glamorous evening gowns and couture-inspired collections, while others showcase swimwear, streetwear, or contemporary fashion. None is necessarily better than another—it simply depends on what inspires you.
2. Join Designers' Mailing Lists
Here's a tip that many people don't know about.
If there's a designer whose work you genuinely love, subscribe to their newsletter or mailing list before Fashion Week begins. While it doesn't happen every season, I've personally received emails from several designers offering standing-room invitations to their official New York Fashion Week presentations.
These invitations didn't include assigned seats, but they were still an incredible opportunity to attend an official runway show. I wasn't able to use those invitations because I was already photographing the same events, but I remember thinking how exciting they would have been for someone who simply wanted to experience Fashion Week from inside the venue.
It's never guaranteed, but joining designers' mailing lists is completely free, and you never know what opportunities might arrive in your inbox.
3. Experience Fashion Week Like a Street Style Photographer
One of my favorite things about Fashion Week actually happens before the runway show even begins.
Outside nearly every official venue, you'll find dozens of photographers waiting for guests to arrive. Many of these photographers specialize in street style photography, documenting the incredible outfits worn by editors, influencers, celebrities, stylists, buyers, and fashion enthusiasts attending the shows.
Although street style photography isn't personally my specialty—I usually spend Fashion Week backstage or photographing the runway—I have many photographer friends who return every season specifically to capture these arrivals.
The atmosphere outside the venues is almost an event in itself.
One thing I've noticed over the years is that many fashion lovers intentionally dress in their boldest, most creative outfits even if they aren't attending the show itself. They know photographers are searching for interesting looks, so they arrive looking their absolute best and simply walk around outside the venue.
And honestly? It works.
Photographers are always searching for people whose style immediately catches their attention. If your outfit stands out, there's a good chance you'll be asked to stop for photos. Afterwards, many photographers are happy to exchange Instagram handles or contact information so they can send you your images later. Some share them for free, while others may charge a small licensing fee.
I actually catch myself doing something similar when I'm photographing inside the venue. Before the runway show begins, I often photograph guests as they're finding their seats, and without even thinking about it, I'm naturally drawn toward the people wearing the most creative or memorable outfits. They're simply the first people who catch my eye.
So if your goal is to experience the energy of Fashion Week and maybe even walk away with beautiful fashion photographs of yourself, put together an outfit that reflects your personality and don't be afraid to stand out.
4. Look for Free Public Fashion Events
Another option that's often overlooked is attending free public fashion events around New York City.
During Fashion Week, organizations and sponsors occasionally host open-air runway shows, fashion activations, pop-up experiences, and public events that anyone can attend. In past seasons, Times Square has hosted free fashion-related events where visitors could watch runway presentations without needing invitations.
These productions may not have the same scale as the official Fashion Week shows, but they're still a fun way to experience the atmosphere if it's your first time visiting during Fashion Week.
I recommend checking Eventbrite, the Times Square Alliance event calendar, and social media as Fashion Week approaches since new events are often announced closer to the dates.

Final Thoughts
I've always loved New York Fashion Week. There's something incredibly inspiring about walking through the city during those few days when fashion seems to take over every corner. The energy is contagious, creativity is everywhere, and you never know what you'll discover around the next block.
The best part is that you don't need to be a famous influencer, magazine editor, or fashion insider to experience it. Whether you buy tickets to an independent runway show, score a standing-room invitation to an official presentation, photograph street style outside the venues, or simply explore the public events happening across the city, there are plenty of ways to become part of Fashion Week.
