The Best Places for a Secret Proposal in New York City (From a Local Proposal Photographer)
There are few places in the world as iconic for a proposal as New York City. Whether you're planning to ask the biggest question of your life with the Manhattan skyline behind you, under blooming spring trees in Central Park, or surrounded by the magic of the holiday season, a proposal in NYC becomes so much more than a simple moment—it becomes an unforgettable experience.
One of my favorite things about photographing secret proposals is watching complete strangers become part of the celebration. Within seconds of hearing "yes," you'll often hear applause from people walking by, congratulations from fellow tourists, and smiles from everyone around you. It's one of those uniquely New York moments that makes the experience even more special.
As a New York City photographer, I've had the privilege of capturing countless surprise proposals throughout the city. Every season offers its own magical locations, and over the years I've discovered which places consistently create the most beautiful memories. Here are my personal favorites.
Best Proposal Locations Available All Year Round
Top of the Rock Observation Deck
Of all the observation decks in New York City, Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center is my personal favorite for proposals.
Unlike many other observation decks, it offers an incredible panoramic view of Manhattan with the Empire State Building standing proudly in the skyline. It's one of the most recognizable views in New York, making your proposal photos instantly iconic.
Because the observation deck is spacious, it's usually possible to find a quieter corner without feeling rushed, especially if you visit earlier in the day.
If you're dreaming of that classic New York skyline backdrop, this is one of the very best choices.
Times Square
If you want your proposal to scream "New York City," it's hard to beat Times Square.
The bright billboards, energetic atmosphere, yellow taxis, and nonstop excitement create a proposal that feels straight out of a movie.
One important tip: morning is your friend.
Times Square becomes incredibly crowded later in the day. Early mornings provide much more space, making it easier to capture beautiful photographs while still enjoying the iconic atmosphere.
That said, even during busier times, there is something incredibly heartwarming about proposing here. I've witnessed entire crowds stopping to clap, cheer, and congratulate couples. It's one of those moments where complete strangers celebrate with you, creating memories you'll never forget.
DUMBO Waterfront
Many visitors automatically think of proposing on the Brooklyn Bridge itself, but personally, I often recommend the DUMBO waterfront instead.
Here you'll still enjoy breathtaking views of the Brooklyn Bridge together with the Manhattan skyline, but the area is generally much less crowded than the bridge.
That means:
more privacy
easier photography
more room to enjoy the moment without hundreds of people walking around you
It's one of the most consistently beautiful proposal locations in New York City.
Bethesda Terrace, Central Park
Bethesda Terrace is one of the most romantic places in all of Central Park.
The elegant architecture, beautiful arches, historic staircase, and fountain create an atmosphere that feels timeless.
One reason I especially love recommending Bethesda Terrace is that it photographs beautifully in every season.
Unlike many areas of Central Park that become quite bare during winter after the leaves have fallen, Bethesda Terrace remains stunning year-round.
Another huge advantage is that much of the terrace is covered, making it one of my favorite backup locations on rainy days. If the weather suddenly changes, couples can still enjoy gorgeous proposal photos without worrying about getting soaked.
Roosevelt Island
Roosevelt Island is one of New York City's hidden gems.
With spectacular skyline views, peaceful waterfront paths, and significantly fewer crowds than Manhattan, it offers a much more intimate proposal experience.
The Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park is especially beautiful around sunset, when the city skyline begins to glow.
If you're looking for something romantic without the constant crowds, Roosevelt Island is definitely worth considering.
The Best Christmas Proposal Locations
Christmas transforms New York City into something magical.
If you're planning a holiday proposal, this is easily one of the most romantic times of year.
Rockefeller Center
Nothing says Christmas quite like Rockefeller Center.
The famous Christmas tree, sparkling lights, and festive atmosphere create an unforgettable backdrop.
Because this is one of the busiest places in New York during December, I usually recommend planning your proposal as early in the morning as possible. You'll still experience the magic while avoiding the largest crowds.
Red Ornament Display & Radio City
The oversized holiday ornaments along Sixth Avenue, together with the nearby decorations around Radio City Music Hall, create another fantastic proposal setting.
These decorations photograph beautifully during both daylight and blue hour.
The Lotte New York Palace
The Lotte New York Palace is one of my favorite luxury proposal locations during the holidays.
Its elegant Christmas decorations create an incredibly romantic atmosphere, and one of the biggest advantages is flexibility.
If the weather turns rainy or snowy, we can create beautiful photographs both outdoors and inside the stunning hotel lobby and courtyard.
It's a wonderful option for couples who want a luxurious New York proposal without worrying too much about the weather.
The Best Spring Proposal Locations
Spring is one of my absolute favorite seasons for proposal photography.
As New York begins to bloom, the city becomes softer, brighter, and incredibly romantic.
Since blooming seasons vary slightly every year depending on the weather, the exact timing can shift by about a week. The dates below are good general guidelines.
Magnolia Season (Late March to Early April)
Magnolias are usually among the very first trees to bloom in New York City.
Approximate season:
Late March through early April
Some of my favorite Central Park locations for magnolia proposals include:
Conservatory Water (near the model boat pond)
Pilgrim Hill
East 72nd Street entrance area
These soft pink and white blossoms create an incredibly elegant backdrop for proposal photographs.
Cherry Blossom Season (Early to Late April)
Cherry blossoms typically bloom after the magnolias.

Cherry Hill in Central Park
The Reservoir (Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir)
The Cherry Walk along the west side of the Reservoir
The Shakespeare Garden area
Depending on the exact bloom schedule, these locations become absolutely magical with clouds of pink blossoms surrounding the walkways.
Restaurant & Rooftop Proposals
Not every proposal needs to happen in a park.
Many couples choose beautiful rooftop restaurants, elegant hotels, or private dining experiences.
If you're planning a restaurant proposal, I always recommend contacting the venue ahead of time to confirm that photography is allowed and to discuss any special arrangements. Most venues are very accommodating when they know a proposal is planned.
