A City Holding Its Breath
Every year, millions of people gather in Times Square to welcome the New Year. But only a handful ever witness the hours before the celebration begins.
I captured this photograph early on the morning of December 31, just after finishing a photoshoot with a client. My studio is only steps away from Times Square, and with the streets already closed and barricades carefully arranged, I was able to walk into a scene that felt almost impossible. The giant screens illuminated the empty avenues, the city stood remarkably still, and for a brief moment, it felt as though New York itself was holding its breath.
Within a few hours, this quiet scene would disappear beneath the energy of millions of visitors from around the world. This photograph preserves that fleeting moment of anticipation—a rare glimpse of Times Square in the silence before one of the world's most celebrated nights.
