The 5 Most Beautiful Places to See Fall Foliage in New York City
A Local Photographer's Guide to the Best Autumn Views (and the Perfect Places for Photos)
There's something magical about New York City in the fall.
The summer crowds begin to fade, the air turns crisp, and almost overnight the city transforms into a sea of golden, amber, and crimson leaves. It's one of my favorite times of year—not only because it's incredibly beautiful, but because every walk through the city suddenly feels cinematic.
While New York is famous for its skyline, Broadway lights, and iconic architecture, autumn adds another layer of beauty that many visitors don't expect. Historic streets, tree-lined pathways, waterfront parks, and hidden gardens become the perfect places to slow down, admire the scenery, and capture unforgettable memories.
Fall foliage typically begins appearing in early October, with the most vibrant colors usually arriving from mid-October through early November. The exact timing changes slightly each year depending on the weather, but this window is generally the best time to experience New York City's spectacular autumn colors.
If you're visiting during this season, here are five places that deserve a spot on your itinerary.
1. Central Park
Location: Manhattan (59th St. to 110th St.)
If you only have time to visit one place during fall in New York City, make it Central Park.
The park is beautiful year-round, but autumn completely transforms it. Every path seems to glow beneath colorful trees, making it one of the most photogenic places in the city.
Some of my favorite spots include:
The Mall & Literary Walk – one of the most iconic tree-lined paths in New York.
Bethesda Fountain & Bethesda Terrace – classic architecture surrounded by colorful foliage.
Wagner Cove – a quiet hidden corner that feels like you've escaped the city.
Bow Bridge – perfect for romantic walks and picturesque views over the lake.
Conservatory Water – peaceful reflections surrounded by vibrant autumn colors.
Gapstow Bridge – one of the best viewpoints for combining skyline views with colorful trees.
The Ramble – winding woodland trails that feel surprisingly secluded in the middle of Manhattan.
Whether you're planning a morning walk, a picnic, or a professional photoshoot, Central Park is easily one of the most beautiful places to experience autumn in New York.
2. Roosevelt Island
Location: East River between Manhattan and Queens
One of New York City's hidden gems, Roosevelt Island offers a completely different fall experience.
Instead of being surrounded by skyscrapers, you can enjoy colorful trees while looking back at Manhattan's skyline across the East River. The contrast between vibrant foliage and modern architecture creates some of my favorite views in the city.
Take a ride on the Roosevelt Island Tram for incredible aerial views before exploring the waterfront promenades, parks, and the beautiful Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park at the southern tip of the island.
It's peaceful, scenic, and often much less crowded than many of Manhattan's popular parks.
3. Brooklyn Botanic Garden
Location: 990 Washington Ave, Brooklyn
While many people visit in spring for the cherry blossoms, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden becomes equally stunning during autumn.
Japanese maples, vibrant gardens, peaceful ponds, and beautifully maintained walking paths create an incredible display of seasonal colors. It's a wonderful place if you're looking for a quieter atmosphere and plenty of opportunities to enjoy nature without leaving the city.
If you love photography, you'll find endless beautiful compositions around every corner.
4. Fort Tryon Park
Location: Upper Manhattan (Riverside Dr. to Broadway near 190th Street)
Fort Tryon Park often flies under the radar, but it offers some of the most breathtaking fall scenery in New York City.
Perched high above the Hudson River, the park combines colorful forests with panoramic river views. The walking paths are peaceful, and the elevated viewpoints make it feel completely different from the rest of Manhattan.
While you're there, it's also worth visiting The Cloisters, whose medieval architecture looks especially magical surrounded by autumn foliage.
5. Brooklyn Bridge Park
Location: Brooklyn Waterfront (between DUMBO and Brooklyn Heights)
If you're hoping to combine classic New York City skyline views with beautiful fall colors, Brooklyn Bridge Park is hard to beat.
The waterfront paths are lined with trees that turn brilliant shades of yellow and orange, while the Manhattan skyline provides an unforgettable backdrop. Walking through the park during golden hour is one of my favorite autumn experiences in the city.
Afterward, take a stroll through the charming streets of DUMBO or nearby Brooklyn Heights, where tree-lined brownstone blocks become especially beautiful during fall.
