If you're visiting New York City during the holiday season, don't limit yourself to Rockefeller Center and the famous Christmas tree. One of my favorite holiday traditions is exploring the city's Christmas markets. Each one has its own personality, and together they offer some of the best shopping, seasonal treats, and festive atmosphere you'll find anywhere in the city.
Whether you're looking for handmade gifts, delicious holiday food, or simply want to soak up the Christmas spirit, these are the four holiday markets I recommend visiting.
1. Bryant Park Winter Village
📍 Address:
Bryant Park, 42nd Street & 6th Avenue, New York, NY 10018
Bryant Park Winter Village is my personal favorite Christmas market in New York City. Located right behind the New York Public Library, it combines shopping, food, and one of the city's most beautiful ice skating rinks.
Unlike many European-style Christmas markets, the skating rink here is completely free if you bring your own skates, making it one of the best holiday experiences in Manhattan.
Best Time to Visit
The market gets very busy in the evenings, especially on weekends.
For the best experience, I recommend arriving:
Weekdays between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM for smaller crowds.
Around 4:00 PM if you want to enjoy both daylight and the beautiful holiday lights after sunset.
What to Buy
Bryant Park is one of the best places to support local artists and small businesses. Some of my favorite finds include:
Handmade jewelry
Christmas ornaments
Candles
Leather goods
Artwork
Stationery
Handmade soaps
Gourmet chocolates
Scarves and winter accessories
If you're looking for gifts that feel unique instead of mass-produced, this is the place.
What to Eat
Don't leave without trying some seasonal treats.
Popular options include:
Hot chocolate
Fresh waffles
Raclette sandwiches
Churros
Gourmet grilled cheese
Holiday cookies
Warm apple cider
Even if you aren't hungry, walking through the food section is part of the experience.
2. Union Square Holiday Market
📍 Address:
Union Square Park, E 14th Street & Broadway, New York, NY 10003
The Union Square Holiday Market has been one of New York City's favorite Christmas traditions for decades.
It feels a little more local than Bryant Park and is one of the best places to shop if you're looking for handcrafted gifts made by independent artists.
Best Time to Visit
Visit:
Weekday mornings before 12:00 PM
Early afternoons between 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM
Weekends become extremely crowded, especially in December.
What to Buy
Union Square is famous for:
Handmade pottery
Wooden toys
Knitwear
Artisan candles
Handcrafted jewelry
Home décor
Gourmet food
Local artwork
Holiday decorations
Many vendors only appear during the holiday season, so you'll often discover items you can't buy anywhere else.
What to Eat
Some favorites include:
Belgian waffles
Empanadas
Fresh pretzels
International street food
Hot apple cider
Fresh pastries
Specialty coffee
3. Columbus Circle Holiday Market
📍 Address:
Columbus Circle, Central Park West & 59th Street, New York, NY 10019
Located at the southwest entrance to Central Park, this market feels especially magical thanks to its location next to the park.
If you're planning a walk through Central Park after shopping, this market fits perfectly into your itinerary.
Best Time to Visit
The nicest time is:
Weekdays between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM
Around 4:00 PM for golden hour followed by holiday lights in Central Park.
What to Buy
You'll find:
Artisan chocolates
Handmade ornaments
Gourmet food
Locally made gifts
Small-batch candles
Leather accessories
Scarves
Home décor
Holiday decorations
I especially like this market if you're shopping for elegant gifts.
What to Eat
Don't miss:
Hot chocolate
Gourmet cookies
Fresh donuts
Warm cinnamon pastries
Roasted nuts
International comfort food
Seasonal desserts
4. Grand Central Holiday Fair
📍 Address:
Vanderbilt Hall, Grand Central Terminal, 89 E 42nd Street, New York, NY 10017
Unlike the other holiday markets, Grand Central Holiday Fair is completely indoors.
That makes it a fantastic option if the weather isn't cooperating or if you're looking for a warm place to shop during the colder months.
Best Time to Visit
Since it's indoors, it's comfortable throughout the day.
For smaller crowds, visit:
Weekdays before 1:00 PM
What to Buy
This market focuses on high-quality artisan products, including:
Handmade jewelry
Luxury home décor
Fine art
Leather accessories
Children's gifts
Holiday ornaments
Gourmet foods
Locally made products
It feels a little more upscale than some of the outdoor markets.
What to Eat
Since the fair is inside Grand Central Terminal, you're just steps away from one of New York's best food halls.
Some great options include:
Magnolia Bakery
Murray's Cheese
Tartinery
Doughnut Plant
Joe Coffee
Fresh pastries and sandwiches from Grand Central Market
Which Holiday Market Should You Visit?
If you only have time for one, I'd recommend Bryant Park Winter Village. It has the perfect combination of shopping, festive food, holiday lights, and the iconic ice skating rink.
If you have more time, here's how I'd choose:
🎄 Best Overall Experience: Bryant Park Winter Village
🛍️ Best for Handmade Gifts: Union Square Holiday Market
🌳 Best Atmosphere: Columbus Circle Holiday Market
☃️ Best for Cold or Rainy Days: Grand Central Holiday Fair
My Favorite Things to Buy at New York's Holiday Markets
Whenever I visit these markets, I almost always end up bringing home:
Christmas ornaments
Handmade candles
Artisan chocolates
Locally made jewelry
Holiday mugs
Handcrafted home décor
Small-batch food products
I also love picking up gifts made by local artists because they feel much more personal than mass-produced souvenirs.
Capture the Magic of Christmas in New York
A visit to New York City during the holidays is something you'll remember for years, so why not bring home more than just souvenirs?
If you're looking for a truly unforgettable keepsake, I'd love to help you capture your Christmas adventure with a professional holiday photoshoot. Every year, I photograph couples, families, solo travelers, and friends against New York City's most iconic holiday backdrops—from the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree and Fifth Avenue holiday windows to the twinkling lights of Bryant Park Winter Village, decorated streets, and festive corners throughout Manhattan.
Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or simply want beautiful photos to remember your trip, a Christmas photoshoot is one of the most meaningful souvenirs you can take home.

Bring a Piece of New York Home
If you're looking for a keepsake that lasts long after the holiday season, I'd also love to invite you to browse my New York photography print collection.
Every image was captured during my years exploring the city, from snow-covered streets and glowing holiday lights to iconic skylines and peaceful winter mornings. A fine art print makes a beautiful, high-end gift for anyone who loves New York and wants to bring a little of its magic into their home all year long.
Whether you're shopping for yourself or someone special, it's a timeless reminder of an unforgettable Christmas in New York City.
