📍6:30 AM – Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree
Let’s kick off with the crown jewel of NYC holiday decor — the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree. This magnificent spruce is an international symbol of the holiday season, lighting up the city and hearts worldwide. Each year, thousands of people flock here to admire its towering beauty, but come evening, the crowds can be overwhelming—think thousands packed into the plaza, holiday music playing, and festive chaos all around. That’s why an early start is your secret weapon. The tree lights usually turn on around 5:00 AM, so arriving by 6:30 AM means you can capture stunning, crowd-free photos of the tree glowing against the early morning sky.

Pro tip: Bundle up—New York mornings in December can be chilly! Also, this iconic location has starred in numerous movies and TV shows. Remember the festive scenes in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York? Yep, that’s right here. And films like Elf and The Devil Wears Prada have featured Rockefeller Plaza, making your photos even more cinematic. Plus, if you’re lucky, you might catch the skating rink opening and enjoy a serene moment before the crowds flood in.

📍7:15 AM – Saks Fifth Avenue Holiday Window Displays
Just a stone’s throw from Rockefeller Center, Saks Fifth Avenue’s holiday windows are legendary. Every year, Saks transforms its storefront into a magical winter wonderland, featuring elaborate, animated displays that tell charming holiday stories. In the soft morning light, these windows seem to come alive in a way that’s both enchanting and peaceful—unlike the bustling crowds that arrive later in the day.

Take your time strolling along the windows, appreciating the intricate craftsmanship and festive themes. These displays have inspired countless artists and filmmakers. Fun fact: Saks’ holiday windows were famously featured in the movie Serendipity, adding a romantic New York charm to the film. And the building itself, with its stunning architecture, is a perfect backdrop for holiday photos.

📍8:00 AM – Grab a Coffee at Ralph’s Coffee Truck (Rockefeller Center)
By now, you’ve earned a cozy break! Right near the tree, Ralph’s Coffee Truck opens at 8:00 AM daily, serving some of the city’s best coffee alongside delicious pastries like cookies, scones, and muffins. This isn’t just any coffee stop—Ralph’s Coffee is known for its chic, vintage aesthetic that’s ultra Instagrammable. The truck’s classic design and festive wreaths make it a photo-worthy pit stop in its own right.

Warm up with a cup of their signature espresso or a creamy latte, and recharge your energy for the next part of your NYC holiday adventure. Whether you’re snapping pics of your perfectly crafted coffee or savoring the rich flavors, this is the perfect pause to soak in the holiday spirit of Rockefeller Center.

Located across from Radio City, this cheerful installation is pure holiday magic. Oversized red and white candy canes are the perfect backdrop for your next Instagram post. Sweet and iconic.

This whimsical walkthrough tree is a hidden gem. It’s open to the public later in the morning (after 10 AM), so you might want to circle back. It’s incredibly fun and very unique—you’ll feel like you’re walking through a storybook scene.

📍Fox News Christmas Tree – 1211 Avenue of the Americas

📍11:30 AM – Bryant Park Winter Village
Location: 6th Avenue between 40th and 42nd Streets
Step into the enchanting Bryant Park Winter Village, one of Manhattan’s most beloved holiday destinations. This charming open-air market transforms the park into a festive wonderland complete with an ice skating rink that’s open to the public (and perfect for some classic holiday photos).

Beyond skating, the village features over 170 artisan stalls offering unique gifts, handmade crafts, and seasonal treats. It’s a fantastic spot to find one-of-a-kind souvenirs crafted by local artists, from cozy scarves to handcrafted ornaments. Don’t forget to grab a warm cup of hot chocolate or fresh pastries from the charming vendors as you wander the market.

Another highlight is Bryant Park’s own Christmas tree, beautifully decorated and standing tall amidst the hustle and bustle. The morning hours are the perfect time to visit, as the Winter Village tends to get incredibly crowded by midday and afternoon.

📍1:30 PM – Macy’s Holiday Windows & Herald Square
No holiday trip to NYC is complete without experiencing the iconic Macy’s Herald Square holiday windows. Located not far from Bryant Park, Macy’s annual window displays are a dazzling blend of nostalgia and modern whimsy. Each year, the department store tells a new holiday story through elaborate scenes featuring festive characters, intricate sets, and creative lighting effects that captivate visitors of all ages.

📍2:30 PM Hudson Yards – End Your Day in Style
After soaking in the heart of Midtown’s holiday charm, take a short cab ride or a 15-minute walk west to Hudson Yards — a modern marvel that becomes an extraordinary winter spectacle during the holiday season. Known for its cutting-edge architecture and vibrant atmosphere, Hudson Yards amps up the festive spirit with dazzling decorations, twinkling lights, and stylish seasonal displays that blend art and holiday cheer.

Inside The Shops at Hudson Yards, you’ll find upscale boutiques and gourmet dining spots that invite you to indulge in everything from holiday treats to luxurious gifts. The warm, elegant indoor decor offers a cozy refuge from the winter chill, while the expansive public spaces outside are alive with festive installations that are perfect for photos.

For a truly unforgettable finale to your day, consider heading up to The Edge, NYC’s highest outdoor sky deck. From this breathtaking vantage point, you can catch a stunning sunset over the city skyline, the Hudson River, and the twinkling lights below. It’s the perfect way to cap off your holiday exploration—a literal high note to your festive NYC adventure.

A Final Word (and a Little Secret From a Local Photographer)

I know some of you may be disappointed that this itinerary doesn’t focus on seeing holiday lights at night. But trust me: daytime in NYC is just as magical. The city sparkles in the sun, and your experience will be way more enjoyable without the crowds. You’ll get clear views, stunning photos, and time to actually feel the holiday spirit instead of being swept up in foot traffic.

As someone who photographs these places every single day during December, I know what it takes to get that front-row magic. If you're looking to capture your NYC holiday memories with professional photos, I’d love to help. I run Times Square Photo Studio, a local studio offering outdoor holiday packages at all these iconic locations—and more.

So, rise early, dress warm, bring your camera (or hire me 📸), and experience the magic of NYC in the most festive way possible.

Happy Holidays & see you in the city!
